Her endurance and tenacity have taken her beyond Switzerland’s borders; she now has several hundred concerts across Europe to her name, has enjoyed remarkable success in Germany, and has released a critically acclaimed debut album, Incendies, preceded by three EPs, including La nuit, which has now been streamed over 2 million times and received glowing reviews in the music press, notably in Les Inrocks.

With La lumière sans fin des étés, Billie Bird once again confirms the full extent of her talent. ‘You cannot take without caring’—these lyrics from ‘Soledad’ spur us on right up to the very last note of the so carefully titled ‘Mes bras vous tiennent’. Throughout the eight tracks, steeped in her heritage – that of exile and resilience – but also, and above all, in her circle of friends and family, from what she affectionately calls ‘la commu’ to those dearest to her, she gives voice to the values that inspire and guide her. As in ‘QQNEX’ (an inclusive shorthand for ‘someone’), the fourth track, which refers to her loved ones as well as the queer community—whose chanted slogans can be heard during a Pride march—or in the deeply moving ‘Je me souviens de tout’, which echoes her Spanish origins and her flight from the dictatorship following her grandfather’s imprisonment in Franco’s jails.

The artist, who speaks five languages fluently and who, in 2019, received the Langue nationale award at the Swiss Live Talents Awards, is also undeniably a master of the language of music! This new indie folk-pop album, ‘entirely analogue’, was written and composed by her alone in her studio in Lausanne and co-produced in Zurich alongside drummer and multi-instrumentalist Domi Chansorn (Sophie Hunger, Bonaparte), with the lyrics reviewed by musician and friend Alizé Oswald (Aliose). A musician and close friend of Billie Bird, Daniela (Odd Beholder) was due to pop round to take some photos of the studio work, but the music and their friendship proved so compelling that she ended up behind the microphones! You can hear her singing on ‘2361 Nuits’ and playing guitar on ‘Mes bras vous tiennent’. Billie Bird sings, but she’s also a guitarist, and this album reaffirms that beyond doubt. We’re struck by the intimacy of her voice and her guitar, and by the subtlety of the arrangements, which prioritise space, nuance and emotion. Whilst the lyrics rekindle the pain of separation, the music envelops them in a comforting gentleness. In ‘Pas BCP mais TJS’ – a tribute to Adrianne Lenker’s delicate ‘Not a lot, just forever’ and the seventh track on the album – Billie Bird takes things a step further with a subtle and particularly effective rhythmic exercise. With La lumière sans fin des étés, Billie Bird sings ‘with her beautiful, warm and melancholic voice’, according to *Libération*, and once again demonstrates her virtuosity in songwriting, composition and performance.

Billie Bird is an indie folk-pop artist who isn’t afraid to explore the depths of human emotion.
